  Bonnie Hagstrum

Bonnie Hagstrum has studied art widely in the United States, Italy, China, and Japan, including the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, the College of William and Mary, and the Museum of Modern Art School. She has won numerous prizes at New Jersey juried shows and is represented in collections throughout the United States, such as the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Hagstrum works in stone or wood sculpture, using the direct carving method; she begins with no preconceived subject matter in mind. Instead, she explores the material to learn its properties and to realize its structure, quality, form, and vitality. “The challenge,” she says, “is to respect the natural integrity of stone and wood as I interpret it and . . . attempt to animate it.” Most recently she has been creating constructions by combining several carved stones or stone and wood together.
