Helio Rodriguez’ work is conceived as an idea “being born” in a sketch. It is reborn when modeled into clay and finally when the liquid poured into the mold becomes solid, the form comes to life.
Helio was born in Rio de Janeiro. He was expelled from public school for drawing nudes during class. He studied medicine until age 20, at which time he changed his major to art. Four years later he graduated with his degree in art. In 1966 he had his first solo exhibition and was also granted his first prize. That was the first of over 100 exhibitions, both collective and individual. In 1970 the artist opened his own art studio where for the next 20 years over 5000 students learned how to sculpt. His first exhibition abroad was in 1988, in Belgium. This show had such a positive impact on his career that he discontinued his teaching activities to give all his time to international exhibitions which included Germany, Argentina, USA, France and Portugal. He was mentioned in 8 books and received 12 prizes.
Using “stone dust”, rough sketches, thoughts and pulleys, spatula and hands, Helio transforms a shapeless idea into tangible poetic figures.
